Squirrel Gourmet Recycling

At lunch during a recent day spent in ceremony with Zoo Animal Ambassadors at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, I watched this trash-diving squirrel visit each of the receptacles, digging up discarded food treasure.

I had treated myself to a Bavarian pretzel with cheese sauce, and as a responsible adult, I placed my trash in the proper bin when I was finished. The container lid still had some sauce on it. Moments later, I was surprised to see the squirrel with my lid.

Holding the lid firmly in his paws, the squirrel buried his face in the oozy, cheesy goodness. As he scoffed it down I felt his total enjoyment of the treat which went something like, “Slurp, slurp, num num num…” That would be animal communication at its most basic level (-:
