Every Day Can Be Love Your Pet Day

National Love Your Pet Day is celebrated every year on February 20, and is a holiday that focuses on giving extra attention to our pets and celebrating our connections.

But all animal people know that every day with our companion(s) can be filled with special moments.

Each animal is an individual, with his/her own likes, dislikes and needs. Understanding how to fulfill those needs is part of the loving care we offer them.

Here you see Night Sky tasting the breezes from inside the safety of the catio, while Manitou is able to roam the “wild” of the urban outdoors.

So, why is that? Normally, for reasons of safety, my cats are indoor only, but when Manitou showed up as a starving stray he was already a mature adult and was more outdoor than indoor. The only way to keep us both reasonably happy was a compromise—after a few days of arguments, he agreed to be inside at night. As he ages, he frequently asks to come in during daylight hours when the weather is not enjoyable or he wants a nap in the comfy beds.

When he comes in, Night Sky sniffs Manitou thoroughly to read the “newspaper” of his adventures. Thankfully, Night Sky is content to be an indoor-only cat (I did ask, just in case). He prefers indulging in the occasional door dash (just to pit his reflexes against mine) rather than full immersion in the urban environment since he knows I will immediately retrieve him (after a slow motion game of chase, of course).

Keeping both cats happy keeps me on my toes, but they are worth it!
