Raccoons Enter Catio While Tamerlan Sleeps

Raccoons enter Catio while Tamerlan sleeps

I saw Tamerlan go to bed, and all was quiet, so I was not expecting to see two Raccoons on the Catio cam in the morning.

Despite having fed Tamerlan breakfast (so I knew he was okay), I still held my breath while watching the footage. It would be highly unusual for Raccoons to attack a cat, but after Attack Opossum I’m still a little nervous…

I edited the video so that you can see where Tamerlan went to bed (in a cat taco bed up on the far end of the bookcase). Next, you see a curious Raccoon enter, and then a second. I think these are brothers, but not certain.

Concern for Tamerlan aside, it was a wonder to see the Raccoons take in the glories of the Catio, reverently touching the cat tree. But what tickled me was that the toy one was so enamored of has a raccoon face (the toy is face down in the video)! Raccoons are tactile—you can see the pleasure this fellow takes in the softness of the body, and oh, the furry tail! I was surprised that Raccoon did not leave with the toy.

I do not know if Tamerlan was awake for the visit. I tend to think not since there is no footage of him getting out of bed after they left. However, after arising, he does head straight for the Toy of Greatest Interest, and “reads” the story of their visit.

Next, Tamerlan “claims” his cat tree and then “reads” some more…

I love Raccoons and Opossums, which is why I maintain the Wild Reiki Spa. However, I am afraid I am not prepared to turn the Catio into the Wild Reiki Wildlife Playground. Opossum may never return, but I know the Raccoons will. And why wouldn’t they? What fun, and under shelter, too! The next thing I know, they’ll be lolling in the beds, expecting breakfast, and then I will have to change the name to the Wild Reiki B&B!

I had not planned on caring for a third cat. With my health issues, and that of my senior cat Manitou, I am already struggling to pay the bills, but I can’t turn Tamerlan away. At this point, he has adopted me, following me everywhere when I am outside. Someday he may become an indoor cat, but he cannot do that now. I need a way to keep him safe, and since Tamerlan is not ready for me to close the door, I am afraid my only option is to purchase a dual-scan microchip cat door and find someone to install it. Unfortunately, that is expensive, so I’ve started a GoFundMe to help Keep Stray Outdoor Cat Tamerlan Safe.
