A Rainy Squirrel Saturday

A very wet Secret Agent Squirrel (SAS) showed up looking for nuts. It’s a rainy Seattle Saturday morning after one lovely, warm, sunny day, and maybe that put him in a mood…or maybe it’s that he’s been fighting again (you can see the bite mark on his face—another battle scar joins his tattered ear). In any case, SAS was grumpy.

I had the door open to take some photos, and my very large seven months-old kitten Night Sky decided to creep out and join me. He was tucked between my crouching legs, and I could hear Secret Agent Squirrel growling. Turns out he was growling at another squirrel who wanted some of those nuts, too.

Wide-eyed Night Sky, curious senior cat Sand and I witnessed the mad squirrel chase that ensued—up the pine tree, round and round the trunk, down, up, and around again.

When a wildly lunging dog that was out for a walk with his people tried to join the squirrel melee Night Sky hastily retreated to the safety of the house.

Intruder routed, SAS finally returned to finish the nuts, and I thought we were done for the day.

Nope.

I hear a bang—SAS is pounding on the mailbox, trying to get my attention. He wanted another round of nuts. If I don’t give in quickly enough he will progress to banging on the window.

As you can see by this last photo Secret Agent Squirrel is a pretty determined fellow. His persistence paid off, he did get a second round of nuts served to him at the Rose Café.
