Tails Of Mort, The Reiki Cat

Tails of Mort, the Reiki Cat

When I first published my book, Tails of a Healer: Animals, Reiki and Shamanism, I wrote a humorous article entitled Inviting a Tiger Home to Play: Unleashing a Shamanic Book which contained stories that clearly showed that the book had a mind, and a spirit, all its own. Several of those stories revolved around dogs and cats who seemed to find the book’s energy irresistible.

And now I have another such story to share thanks to reader Donna Safley of Zion, Illinois who kindly took the time to write to me and share her enjoyment of my book.

“All of my family have said that I have a bond with both wild and domestic animals. My niece has turned my love for animals towards obtaining second degree Reiki. She sent me your book and I am devouring it. You practice such warmth, understanding and compassion towards animals that I have cried at the energy that you use so lovingly. I must tell you that your energy comes through the book. My 18 year old cat, Mort, has taken to resting on it.”

Donna also shared that Mort, her dog and her niece’s dog are “Reiki sponges,” but that Mort seemed to be a notch above in his love for Reiki.

Eighteen years ago, as a kitten, Mort grabbed her husband David’s pant leg, and they ended up bringing him home where another cat, Kiki, adopted him. However, Mort never truly became a demonstrative cat to others, mostly just to Donna.

Book Tails of a Healer: Animals, Reiki and Shamanism by Rose De DanWhen Donna took Reiki training, Mort discovered a new love. Donna’s Reiki Master, Helen, sent papers home with her to study and Mort took to sitting on them and “hatching” them. Now, when Donna even thinks of doing Reiki on any of the other animals, Mort mysteriously shows up to join in, absorbing the energy from the sidelines. And apparently Mort has also taken quite a liking to my book, Tails of a Healer.

Donna said, “Whenever I read a book, Mort climbs on the bed and noses it. However, with your book, he rubs his scent on the book. If I put the book on the bed, he is on top of it. When I put it on the nightstand and go to turn out the light, I get the oddest look from him. It is as if he is saying, ‘Hey, what do you think you are doing?’”

I was so tickled by Mort and Donna’s story that I asked if I could write this article. When I requested a photo of Mort from Donna to go along with it I expected to receive a picture of just Mort, however Donna surprised me by setting up a photo shoot of Mort with my book.

Donna told me, “I just came from the bedroom. I put a cover on the bedspread and put out your book. Well, guess who was rubbing the book? I used my cell phone and captured a couple of shots of him with his book. Honestly, you must have some energy!

“As I write, he is in there with the book. How do you explain this to others that do not experience what Reiki does? Maybe it is like having the sunshine hit your face on the first gentle spring day after a long, cold winter?

“Just to let you know, I did an experiment with Mort. I had another book in the room. You know that cats love to ‘read’ what you are reading. So, I put both books out. Mort sniffed both and then went back to yours.

“Your interest is so appreciated. I am proud of the lessons that my father and late husband taught me about the creatures in life that touch us. Reiki has added to these lessons and enhanced my relationships.

“Thank you for thinking that my Mort is special. He is, just like all creatures.”

Donna and Mort, I could not agree more. My thanks to both of you for sharing your love for each other, for Reiki, and for my book. When I wrote its’ stories one by one, I never dreamt that eventually they would touch so many lives in so many different ways. And how many authors can say that they have cat fans?
