What is Reiki? Wait, before you sigh and move your attention elsewhere since I know it is a question that a multitude of Reiki Masters have tackled many times (myself included)—but I’ve decided to try a different approach.
The standard answer I usually offer when asked is, “Reiki is a non-invasive form of energy healing that balances the body, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.” Short, sweet, to the point, and dry as dust. Which is definitely not the way I FEEL about Reiki.
Reiki is an immense well of energy that anyone with the proper training can call upon for comfort and healing. A vast concept—difficult to grasp on the personal level—which is where I understand Reiki best.
I have been practicing Reiki since 1995, and over the years it has transformed my life and that of my animal companions. It has been my go-to first aid kit when I needed something right now for emergency situations, such as when I accidentally closed my cat Kiya’s tail in the door or when my dog Cerne required immediate surgery for bloat. And Reiki has been there on a daily basis for them as well, offering relaxation and relief from aging-related issues. And for all of that I was, and am, grateful.
The depth of my gratitude is boundless for the comfort that Reiki offers for end of life issues like the night my cat Kiya woke me because she was having trouble breathing. Having Reiki literally at my fingertips, watching her anxiety fade and her breathing resume a normal rhythm as the energy flowed was a blessing beyond words.
But Reiki does more than offer comfort and physical healing—it also builds trust, and coaxes me to become the best person AND the best healer I can be. At a core level Reiki has helped me heal my own emotional hurts, and in the process I have become more truly who I am—and my animals and I have grown closer as a result.
So, what is Reiki?
Reiki is my light in the midst of darkness—my connection to something greater than myself—and in the warmth of its healing energy all beings thrive.
Reiki is love.
Reiki is vitality.
Reiki is the sound of a cat’s purr of gratitude, a dog’s sigh of relief, a child’s hug and skip of joy.
Reiki is life.
Reiki is my life.
