The Other Work Of Being A Healer

The Other Work of Being a Healer

When I first opened my healing practice in 1996, I knew I would need to spread the word about what Reiki (and later shamanism) was and how it could benefit animals. What I never expected was how much I would have to learn over the years to accomplish that goal.

I started with print ads, and as a graphic designer, that was in my wheelhouse. I even hand-drew an illustration for my first ad which would then have type overlaid (yes, it was that long ago, lol). At the time, my practice was called Wild Kingdom Reiki in honor of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom that I was so inspired by as a kid.

Then came the internet, and thanks to a shamanic buddy who was up on the latest tech, I was among the first spiritual practitioners to have a website (2001 version on the Wayback Machine, position mouse over “Reiki” for navigation fun). Of course, maintaining it was another story.

Eventually, I had to change the name to Wild Reiki and Shamanic Healing, and since technology had evolved, redesign the website on a better platform. I won’t bore everyone with the MANY things I had to learn along the way; suffice it to say that while I cannot design a website from scratch, I can write a little code thanks to having been on the cutting edge of computer formatting in the printing industry, add pages, and do some other basic things. As a solopreneur, some days it can be daunting keeping up with today’s technology!

Lately, I’ve spent quite a bit of time revisiting the Sessions section of my website.

After more than 30 years of working with animals and people, I realized that the way I described my sessions online no longer fully reflected how I actually work.

One of the most important things I wanted to clarify is that animal communication and ReikiShamanic energy healing aren’t separate services in my sessions. They inform and guide one another throughout our time together.

I also wanted to better explain the kinds of situations I work with, particularly older animals, chronic health challenges, behavioral issues, and animals going through major changes.

And, as always, there was a balancing act: I want to speak honestly about what I’ve witnessed in my work without promising a particular outcome. Every animal is different.

One of the stories that helped me think about this was Tank, whose family saw a remarkable difference in the quality of his remaining time after we began working together. His story is now part of the Sessions page.

I’ve also updated the Scheduling and FAQ pages so that they better reflect how I actually work with clients.

It’s funny how much effort can go into something that looks, from the outside, like “just updating a webpage.” 🙀

If you’re curious, take a look at the newly updated Sessions page.
