In Memory of Renee Nicole Good: Bearing Witness and Choosing the Path of Healing
Today, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent in south Minneapolis while trying to protect her neighbors. Blessings and prayers for her family, all who knew her, and all who witnessed this horrible event. Gratitude and prayers for those who documented despite personal trauma and fear; something like this leaves scars.
Earlier, I went to the grocery store, where, once again, I paid more for my groceries than I had the week before (and the week before that). Tariffs are to blame. I was wearing my Statue of Liberty t-shirt where she stands strong with torch upraised. It says “I’m with her.”
I came home with my groceries and discovered the tragic news. Renee Nicole Good had been murdered, shot several times in the face by ICE. DHS is trying to spin the story as “she was trying to ram the agents.” I made myself watch the video, and they are flat out LYING.
It has also been confirmed that the woman was a U.S. citizen, which should not make a difference, because we have laws that say you cannot just shoot unarmed people regardless of citizenship or the lack thereof.
As a Reiki practitioner, I built a Bridge of Light and sent it back to the time of her passing. Since I did not have permission, I added the proviso that if she did not wish to receive it, I would honor her wish. I had tears while doing so. I also sent Reiki to the situation—not just this situation—but the entire mess the current administration is making of our American rights and liberties as laid out in our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
So, why am I sharing all of this? It is not about partisanship, although I can most emphatically say that I do not support anything the current administration is doing. Their lack of humanity and care for no one but themselves is on full display. I am sharing this because it is about healing. Our individual healing and our collective healing as a nation.
I am following the 2300-mile Walk for Peace led by Buddhist monks and the dog Aloka, a walk that will culminate in our nation’s Capitol. This morning, the one thing I saw before going out to shop was their post on Forgiveness. It was the first thing I thought of after I heard the tragic news. I asked myself, “How do I forgive this?” I am no Buddhist monk; my first instinct was to take them down (the current administration, where the guilt for this truly lies). Note: I have sometimes been admonished by my guides to wear the feather down (upright denotes a warrior in Native American tradition).
With that reminder in mind, I did my personal clearing work. Afterward, my mind and heart were calmer, and I could more easily see the Path.
Positive shifts and changes are created through personal work, actions in the physical world, and spiritual practices. So, in case you had a similar reaction to mine, here is the guidance I offer:
1) Energy Work: Every time you become upset, scared, or angry, do your personal clearing work first; this is the spiritual healing oxygen mask rule—take care of yourself before you try to help others.
2) Physical Actions: Keep speaking up and out, and peacefully protesting when you can. Keep calling and writing your Representatives, relentlessly. Stay informed through reputable sources. Heather Cox Richardson is a great one to follow for factual and historical perspectives. She does a twice-weekly Politics Chat on YouTube to explain the ins and outs of what is going on, and you can also read her nightly Substack posts on Letters from an American (read the comments section for other action tips from readers).
3) If you are Reiki 2 and above, put aside time each day to send Reiki to the situations you care about. Let go of attachment to outcome when you do so, and turn it over to the highest and best good. None of us has any idea how that should best play out, but the universal life force energy does.
4) Be kind to yourself and others. Together we are strong.
