When Coyote Calls and Wind Answers 08-31-2025 Newsletter
Recently, I was thrilled to hear a Coyote less than a block away conversing in yips with its partner. At first, I wondered if it might be a dog. Listening carefully, I heard and felt the wild in its voice, and so did neighbor dogs, who added sharp warning barks: Danger! Wild intruder! Alert! Confirmation from an impeccable source.
The following night, Coyote’s voice was interspersed with hoots from the local Barred Owls. I sat in wonder, as though I’d stepped into my own living nature documentary.
Not long after, Coyote stopped by the Wild Reiki Spa for a drink. The wildlife cam caught a few genteel coughs—apparently, s/he drank too quickly. The cam not only delights me with glimpses of my wild neighbors, it also serves as a warning system for my human neighbors in West Seattle: keep cats indoors and be mindful when walking small or elderly dogs at twilight, night, and early morning (see tips on co-existing peacefully with coyotes).
What struck me most was what happened, silence at the Wild Reiki Spa; for days, none of my regular visitors appeared on the cam. No Raccoons. No Opossums. And thankfully, no Cats. It was as if the tide of Coyote had come in, and the smaller beings flowed back to safety. When they finally reappeared, I felt my heart lighten. It was a reminder that life moves in rhythm—sometimes with seeming chaos— but life flows on and balance is maintained. I imagine there were some that were caught in the tide, but Coyote does not take more than he can eat. He plays a crucial role in keeping the Web of Life whole.
In shamanism, Coyote often represents divine deception: the seemingly chaotic detours that lead us into transformation and freedom from what no longer serves. That felt like an important message, too.
Not long after, another ally spoke. My longtime wind chimes fell with a muted metallic crash; their cords had rotted away. They were from a Feng Shui series. Its title is Energy, and it has been with me since 1999, when I first moved cross-country to Seattle and set up my healing practice. A long time ago, for a wind chime.
Intensive research showed that the series was no longer available. And I wondered if it was time for a change. I listened to all the small chimes available, and none felt right. Finally, wind chime Neptune, from the Woodstock Chimes planetary series, spoke to me. Large, resonant, powerful. As a slow-moving outer planet, Neptune influences generational themes, universal consciousness, intuition, empathy, and connection according to my research. All of which aligned perfectly with the deeper personal and global healing that my work is currently focused on.
But something more was needed. Soon after, smaller companion wind chime Pluto joined us. Astrologically speaking, the planet symbolizes transformation, power, control, and rebirth, representing death and renewal on both individual and generational levels. As a slow-moving, distant outer planet, Pluto’s energy focuses on deep, fundamental changes, bringing buried compulsions and hidden truths to the surface to foster spiritual evolution. Its influence can manifest as power struggles, trauma, and destruction, but also as the strength to overcome adversity and emerge from ashes.
Neptune and Pluto together feel like allies for this moment in time. Their voices stir in me the same sense that Coyote brings: what looks like disruption may actually be the gateway to rebirth.
This flash of insight came as I was finishing the theme for September’s Sacred Rhythms: A Year of Nature’s Wisdom. This month’s Teacher is Wind—the freedom of movement, the currents that stir change, the power that blesses families and communities. During the shamanic journey, participants will encounter Wind as a living teacher and receive guidance on navigating the shifting seasons of life.
And, of course, Wind now sings at my door through Neptune and Pluto, reminding me that change is both inevitable, sacred, and welcome for the restoration of balance.
So if life feels breezy—or downright stormy—know that there are ways to meet the Winds of Change with strength and grace.
Both Sacred Rhythms and Reiki Level 1 Class (starting Sept. 10) are invitations to do just that. Reiki helps you ground, heal, and connect with spirit and animals—even if you’ve taken Reiki before but don’t feel fully confident, this class is a powerful refresher. Both offerings are open worldwide.
I feel the Winds stirring. Coyote, Wind, Neptune, and Pluto all agree—it’s time for a shift. Perhaps you feel it too.
Hold onto your hat—it might get breezy!
Enjoy the blessings of the season,
