Quotes

“We must see these creatures who live in our midst not as a replacement for their wild cousins but as a connection to the wild. Let us never forget our roots…If we ever cut ourselves apart from the wilderness from whence we arose, we will no longer be human.” — Don Hamilton, DVM

A client just contacted me about the deaths of 100 healthy sled dogs, asking if I knew of any organizations or movements that could help.

At first I thought I did not know anyone outside of the animal protection organizations named. And then I thought of my Reiki students, and finally, of Reiki practitioners everywhere. Why not send Reiki for the highest healing good?

The tragic deaths of the dogs in the name of business appears to have no bright side. But there is an opportunity here not just for the dogs themselves, but also for change in public awareness and laws that may protect other animals in future from a similar fate. Their deaths may not be in vain—instead they could be driving forces for change—something that I feel the sled dogs, who live for the work that they do, would appreciate.

If you would like to help here are my suggestions for all Reiki practitioners trained to Level II or higher (for Reiki Level I or non-Reiki practitioners, prayers are also very powerful):

1. For the Dogs: Send Reiki to the situation/time of the dogs’ crossing into spirit (not directly to the dogs since you do not have their permission), and build a Bridge of Light for them. Set your intention for the highest and best good, and let go of attachment to the outcome. Be in a place of balance and calm—trust the wisdom of the Reiki energy, do not let your emotions get in the way. If you have trouble doing that I would suggest sending Reiki for your own self-healing with intent to release whatever is triggering your anger or sorrow.

To build a Bridge of Light simply use the three Reiki symbols for sending Reiki, and say: “I ask that a Bridge of Light be built for the 100 sled dogs who were killed in British Columbia, and that healing energy be sent to the time of their passing. I ask that their deaths be as painless as possible, and that they may be surrounded by love and light so that their spirits may journey in joy, and with guidance, to wherever they are to go next. And if any do not wish to receive this energy that is their right, and I respect that.” And then finish by rubbing your hands together to disengage when you feel the send is complete.

2. For the Situation: Send Reiki to the overall situation, letting go of attachment to outcome, with the intention that it be for the highest good of all. If you find you have difficulty letting go of the need for a particular outcome then I would again recommend sending energy for your own self-healing before proceeding.

It is never easy to hear about the seemingly senseless tragedies that our news channels deluge us with on a daily basis. But don’t forget that as a Reiki practitioner you can help shift happen. Reiki can be a powerful force for positive change on an individual or a global basis. Trust the energy and yourself, be a conduit without attachment, and all will come into alignment as it should.

A powerful post for what seemed a powerless situation. I especially appreciated your suggestions on how we can handle the emotions these sorts of things bring up making it challenging to do our best work. Thank you for posting this.

    Dear Rose:

I, too, thank you for making your ideas available to us. A few days ago, I read a headline concerning this mass murder, and felt, for once when it comes to animal news, unable to read any more details. Still, I have had such deep sadness in my heart for the dogs since then.

Upon finding your post, I clicked on the link you provided to better understand what had happened. Though it was painful to learn, coming back to your post and reading it was amazingly calming. I have attained only a Reiki I level, and rarely practice these days, but I am now doing what I can personally with what I have. Also, your piece has been posted on my Facebook Wall as well as e-mailed out in an effort to reach as many Reiki practitioners- and all others who would wish to help – possible.

    Many blessings to you.

    Sincerely,

    Charla

  • I went to Alaska last spring and had the honor of holding sled dog pups and seeing the adult dogs pulling in action. You cannot help but be awed by them. It is always difficult to hear about animals who are sick or dying. Distance Reiki is good for the dog who is very sick or about to cross over. I have done hands on and distance healing for a Paws for A Cause dog. His infected ears healed very quickly.

  • Thank you for sharing this information about how to do Reiki for healing of animals after their death. I shared this post on Facebook and on Twitter for others to see and read.

    • Thank you, Patricia! I have not had a chance to write something directly related to the current tragedy, the deaths of 48 exotic animals in Ohio, but wanted to offer help to the animals and the people who have been affected.

  • Wonderful post. I was horrified by the news when I heard it. Many thanks for sharing information on Reiki and healing.
